As I grew up I was told to be successful I needed to work hard in my education so that I may get a degree. A degree I was told was my ticket to the great success I so much wanted.
Fast forward to right now and all I was taught is being challenged 1 Corinthians 3:19 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight…”
Please don’t misquote me, I am not saying education is not important, it is very imperative and in fact strive to pursue it further. My point is, education is not the key to great success.
The question in most of our minds is what sets great men and average men apart. Why do some people seem to know the secret to success while others still struggle to even purchase their first home?
I have struggled with this question for a longtime. How is it that in a situation where two people who maybe be doing the same thing and have similar work ethic, one prospers more than the other. This is when what we were taught starts playing mind games to us.
I cannot help but say “there is something more. What is that more?” Because that’s what I want.
I am quickly reminded the stories of men of great success in the Word of God such as Abraham, Job, and Joseph among other. This famous verse jumps to mind;
Matthew 6:33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
These men pursued the kingdom of God as if nothing else mattered more than it. In the process wealth and success came running after them. These guys had serious wealth.
What baffles my mind more is where we say education in this world, God says grace and favour, elements that are not taught in school.
The next question I ask is, “how did they attain this grace and favour that led to their great wealth and success?”
The following are some of the character traits we found studying the life of Joseph. These became an assured key to their success.
1.HE KNEW GOD
Do you know God? We all know who God is but not all of us know Him.
We can only know God by surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ in salvation. This way we make a claim in His kingdom and are identified by God as His own.
Keep in mind He owns all things and will not hesitate to grant you what you ask for, according to His will.
Funny enough God wants great things for our lives more than we want them!
2.HE HAD A DREAM
Dreams are what gives our lives purpose. Through our visions and dreams, we gain hope to keep living and pursuing our dreams. A man or woman without a vision and dream live as if their life is without consequences.
A person with a vision and dream knows where they are going and are able to maintain their focus on their dream.
For instance, a man who has a dream to build his family a house and home will not waste his money on beer or women. His dream will keep him in check each time.
As for me I seek to have a great marriage of God and that means I live a faithful single life dedicated to God so that when it is time God may present me to a God fearing man whom will be my husband. This means I cannot date or adopt practices that may harm my future marriage.
A vision and dream keeps you in check because you know what you want.
Men and women who have dreams and visions are the most successful in the world according to research. #dreams keep you in check!
3.HE WAS A MAN OF INTEGRITY.
Most people today want success yet don’t want to do the work. God just as every institution has His rules. If you want to get a share of His things you too must play by His rules.
You can’t want great success yet you compromise and sin as you wish.
A little bribe won’t hurt anybody, it’s just a biro how can this be stealing, it’s just one night after all I have not slept with anyone a whole year this one time won’t hurt, nobody ever has to know, are some of the lies we tell ourselves.
Guess what? It hurts and it will hurt your success. One of the reasons Joseph was successful was because of his great integrity and fear of God.
Genesis 39: 8- 9 “But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.” There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
As a result of His faithfulness to God all that Joseph did was blessed by God and He found favour with everyone.
Still think that a little sin doesn’t hurt? Think again because we all know the opposite of God’s favour and grace.
4.HE WAS A DILIGENT WORKER
Wow, after everything that Joseph went through, the best reaction was to mourn, complain and curse each waking moment because he had done nothing to deserve what he was going through yet he was a slave later turned prisoner.
Despite all this he worked diligently as unto the Lord. Not even once did he complain. NOT ONCE as it is recorded in the bible.
Ok, now let’s interrogate our lives, are we diligent workers or people who constantly complain for what we go through? I have been complainer most of my life for bad things that happen to me until I learned the effect of complaining:
Joshua 5:6 “For the sons of Israel walked FORTY YEARS in the wilderness…”This was for a journey that only took 14 DAYS!
We are to be diligent in all that we do as unto to God not man.
After all it is God who rewards our hard work not man.
5.HE PERSEVERED THROUGH IT ALL
James 1:2- 4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
If you are a Christian pursuing God in sincerity by now you know trials and tribulations are your portion. This, as much as we don’t like it, is part of God’s grooming process. There is no way you will say yes to Him and not go through this. (Tip: Make peace with this in advance for easier sailing.)
Well, while that may be obvious the main question and test is will you stand till the end?
Many fall off or decide to quit in the middle. For the ones who persevere till the end get to see the amazing treasure in store for them at the end.
Close your eyes and imagine this; Joseph, a man who had never been to school, was betrayed by his brothers, was sold into slavery, worked as a servant, was sent to prison, finally became THE PRIME MINISTER OF EGYPT a foreign land! That’s what God will do for you if you honour Him.
The secret of great success is hidden in pursuing God in integrity, diligence, perseverance and faithfulness.
God bless you all.
